Job Responsibilities and Requirements: Duties and Accountabilities: Reporting to the Research manager of the Trade and International Integration Division in DECRG (DECTI), the Lead Economist will: Define and contribute to the research agenda of DECTI, including an active program on the study of international trade and investment patterns, integration of product and labor markets, as well as international policy cooperation and coordination between governments. Lead a team of researchers, consultants, and administrative staff to develop and conduct policy-related research on trade and investment patterns, based on innovative micro (household and firm) and macro level analysis. Provide technical assistance and substantive advice to internal and external policymakers on international and domestic policies regarding regulation of trade and investment flows. Provide guidance and mentorship to younger researchers in the DECTI team. Provide intellectual leadership across Group in areas of economic integration and international cooperation, including data collection, policy formulation and empirical methodologies. Engage in the broader research community outside in the areas of focus for this position, including active participation and leadership in international fora and conferences. Selection Criteria: The position requires a motivated and well-trained economist with strong analytical and interpersonal skills, demonstrated leadership qualities, a commitment to excellence, and a track record of research on international trade and investment policy, and international cooperation across a number of institutional settings. In addition to meeting the generic criteria for international level GH, successful candidates need to meet the following criteria: Advanced university degree (PhD required) in economics with a focus on international economics, policy analysis, and international cooperation plus sustained record of achieving high-quality substantive results over an extended period of time (typically at least 10 years) in more than one world region (including both pre-Bank experience and Bank experience). A distinguished record of publications in leading peer-reviewed academic journals. Demonstrated ability to be an intellectual leader in the area of trade and investment policy, and international cooperation, and with a strategic vision to shape initiatives in these areas with institutional partners and client countries. Proven ability in fundraising and advocacy at the global level on issues related to the work program of the DECTI team on analyzing development, poverty and growth implications of global economic integration for households, workers and firms. Managing trust funds and projects within the Bank will be considered a strong asset A commitment and demonstrated capacity to work with operational colleagues in on policy relevant research and technical support. Proven capacity to work with all DECRG colleagues to contribute to the success of the broader DECRG agenda on poverty reduction, growth, inequality and shared prosperity. Competencies: General Economic Knowledge and Analytical Skills - Has track record of intellectual leadership and ability to integrate economic-specific knowledge and specific micro/sector fields of expertise; provides quality assurance and assesses technical soundness of works/reports. Knowledge and Experience in Development Areas - Influences the design and execution of major policy and/or research initiatives; conceives and promotes innovations in development policies, organization, and management to improve operational work. Policy Dialogue Skills - Has a track record of conducting effective policy dialogue with country counterparts and other stakeholders; communicates and defends difficult issues and positions to senior bank management and government officials. Leadership within the Profession - Has significant volume of professional publications (including articles, books, and book chapters, as well as refereed papers in top development, professional thematic, and policy journals.) Research Temperament/Intellectual Curiosity - Has the curiosity, drive, and maturity to uncover and address complex and sometimes overlooked questions and perspectives. Written and Verbal Communication Skills - Demonstrates a strong command of all forms of communication and delivers messages in a consistently effective, timely, and engaging manner. Team Leadership - Successfully puts together a team with complementary skills and ensures high-quality technical output and success of projects while being cost-conscious. Client Orientation - Translates insights into practice across disciplines, hierarchies, geographies and organizational units in service of clients.
