Job Responsibilities and Requirements: Responsibilities Patent agents and associates work under the supervision and guidance of senior associates and partners in our Intellectual Property section and perform a variety of patent-related activities, primarily in the areas of patent prosecution, opinion drafting, freedom to operate analysis, and due diligence work. Specific duties include the following: Prepare and prosecute patent applications and implement portfolio management strategies in a variety of biology-related fields, including molecular biology, agricultural biology, cancer biology, and immunology, and possibly assist in prosecution of pharmaceutical-related patent applications. Work directly with clients in prosecuting patent applications and ensuring that prosecution strategy aligns with clients business needs. Interact with technical and non-technical staff of clients ranging from startups to well-established multinationals. Formulate and ask questions essential to clarifying the distinct features or properties of the invention. Investigate and respond promptly to clients inquiries about the prosecution of patent applications. Evaluate invention disclosures. Understand, critique and provide insightful opinion on scientific data relating to inventions. Conduct patentability searches, analyze results, and present findings to clients. Review product specifications. Identify and evaluate freedom-to-operate issues. Collaborate with colleagues on various projects. Adapt effectively in different team environment. Present ideas, reasoning and conclusions in a concise way to colleagues. Provide insightful feedback and arguments to colleagues on their ideas. Qualifications Ph.D. degree in Biology or Biochemistry (will also accept candidates who have defended dissertation and are waiting for degree to be conferred). Registered as a patent agent/attorney with the USPTO. Demonstrated knowledge in one or more of the following scientific fields: molecular biology, agricultural biology, cancer biology, and immunology. Demonstrated patent legal and scientific writing ability. Demonstrated skills verbally presenting patent legal and scientific concepts to wide audiences, including technical and non-technical staff of clients.
