Job Responsibilities and Requirements: ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS Evaluate invention disclosures Conduct prior art searches Prepare, file, and prosecute USPTO and EPO patent applications Keep abreast of developments in IP law IP opinion support on issues such as freedom to operate, ownership, infringement, and validity Advise employees on IP best practices, including formal training sessions Depending on interest and applicant background, patent assertion support Interface with IP practitioners/counsel, both internal and external to KS, related to patent, trademark, and related litigation matters. Ensure accurate and timely departmental response to global IP information and analysis requests from senior KS management, internal and outside IP practitioners/counsel, and outside counsel. Perform highly specialized and in-depth patent searches for infringement risk analysis and analysis of received invention disclosures. Ensure protection of global KS trademarks, by assessing availability, determining registration criteria, assisting in registration, and determining renewal criteria and action. Review and approve action dates and deadlines to ensure timely response to communications from U.S. and foreign patent and trademark offices, and ensure timely payment of maintenance fees, annuities, and maintenance of related patents and trademark matters. Manage patent, trademark, and litigation activity costs to ensure adherence to global budget requirements. Ensure monitoring of global development activities; analyzing KS technologies/designs for comparison against the current state of the art, and both competitive and KS prior art citations; reporting and making recommendations to Senior KS Executive Management and KST Patent Management; as appropriate. Manage IP coordination activities with other KS facilities, globally. Oversee Management Information Systems and Relational Database Management Systems for in-house use, and for interface with and augmentation of KST Patent Management systems. Ensure data verification and maintenance integrity of databases in use by KST Patent Management and outside IP counsel. Regular attendance is an essential job function. Will spend part of his/her time as a member of continuous improvement teams undertaking projects and seeking ways to improve the quality of KSI s products and services. EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE: A technical degree, with a preference for optical or other imaging background and experience, preferred or other technical backgrounds that are applicable to the medical-device field (e.g., electrical and mechanical engineering) Working familiarity with patents, trademarks, and design models, typically gained after 3 to 5 years experience, although those with more experience are welcomed to apply IP enforcement experience a plus First-hand R&D and design engineering experience in the medical device field (preferred) A mix of in-house and law firm experience (preferred) German language is a plus.
