Job Responsibilities and Requirements: Department / Unit: Patient Access Status-FTE: Full-Time - 1 Shift: Day/PM Qualifications: High School graduate or equivalent 3 years progressive experience in either patient access or patient accounts experience or in working as an advocate or liaison in a community setting using similar skills. Basic understanding ICD~9 and CPT coding. Strong medical terminology background Successful completion of a data entry assessment Ability to proficiently communicate and interact with the public, physicians and associates. Ability to function in a fast~paced environment with a high level of empathy, tact, and poise. knowledge of general office equipment (computer, photocopier, fax, and multi~line telephone) Basic knowledge of Microsoft Word, Excel, and Access. Basic knowledge of registration systems Ability to type while interviewing Must demonstrate a high level of customer awareness and a strong commitment to fulfilling customer needs Ability to read, write, speak and follow oral and written instruction Current knowledge of regulatory standards Projects a mature, compassionate, positive, customer service attitude in a professional demeanor. Works independently with flexibility. Excellent spelling, grammar, communication and interpersonal skills. NA Must be willing to attend monthly department meetings Ability to function well in a very fast~paced demanding professional/technical and highly stressed environment Must be able to perform physical tasks such as pushing, bending, occasionally lifting (up to 50lbs) boxes of paper/supplies, hearing, visually viewing of computer screen, verbalizing and manual dexterity for data entry typing. If position has direct patient care or direct patient contact the following lifting requirement supersedes any previous lifting requirement effective 06/01/2015. Ability to lift up to 35 pounds without assistance. For patient lifts of over 35 pounds, or when patient is unable to assist with the lift, patient handling equipment is expected to be used, with at least one other associate, when available. Unique patient lifting/movement situations will be assessed on a case~by~case basis. Description: The purpose of the Financial Counselor position is to ensure patients are educated on their financial obligations and provided resources to secure coverage via state and federal programs, to screen patients for access to Advocate's Charity program and if over income for program, provide payment plans to the patient based on Advocate policy. Accountabilities: Various Duties as assigned by manager Responsible for reviewing daily registrations to identify possibly financial risk due to limited or no insurance coverage. Works with the uninsured patients on financial options. Provide education to insured patients who ask for assistance on unpaid portions/out of pocket expenses. Attempts to seek maximum reimbursement on behalf of the hospital through various external and internal programs including charitable programs. Conducts case by case financial evaluation of self~pay registrations assigned to determine if reimbursement is available through various Governmental and non~Governmental programs or other third party sources. Contact patients to discuss financial planning prior to service when notified of an non~covered or out of network service. Conducts interviews, distributes charity applications, gathers documentation and sends to charity care coordinator for charitable consideration.
