Job Responsibilities and Requirements: The Industry Manager Construction Coatings and Surface Modifiers (hereafter named IM ) will create and drive the global strategy for the construction paints & coatings industry segments as well as the overall portfolio of Michelman s surface modifier business within the Coatings Group. The IM will write and implement long term marketing plans for these business lines, collaborate with cross-functional teams including the regional marketing and sales functions and the technical marketing function and ensure execution of this throughout the 3 business regions. The role will oversee the development of growth platforms (product groups and service offerings), gather and provide actionable market intelligence and drive our communication activities for these industry segments. The role will also see how to develop sustainable growth platforms based on the knowledge we gather from the industries we serve via our sales, business development, technical and marketing functions. The industry manager will initiate, manage and deliver product and / or service development projects to sustain the growth of the business. Dimensions/Situation The coatings group has a strategy to create new growth engines in industrial coatings while at the same time maintaining our market share of core business and identify new growth options within this space. This space encompasses: Construction coatings (including concrete, flooring, waterproofing, etc.) Wood stains and varnishes (including deck stains, exterior wood paints, ) Surface modifiers (wax emulsions and other secondary dispersions) as additives to paints, coatings and processing aids for e.g. release, anti-slip, gloss, buffability, water resistance and - beading, etc. Miscellaneous (adhesives, agrochemicals, stucco, tiles, roofing, water proofing, curing aids etc.) Today this business represents approx. $ 50M. The industry manager will combine industry knowledge, product knowledge, business acumen, and leadership skill in driving a cross-functional team, often with the close cooperation of select customer and industry end-users, to deliver sustainable, profitable growth. Use the full resources of the Company to achieve the business objectives. Primary Responsibilities Develop strategic plan for relevant industry segments consistent with the global strategic standards Gather strategic intelligence (market data, competitive intelligence, trends, market dynamics, etc.) Target industry financial and non-financial parameters (joint responsibility held with sales, regional marketing and function) Annual target industries revenues as set in AOP Annual target industries RMM or CM as set in AOP Annual stretch targets for new products / developments (revenue, RMM) Product management : Develop and track plans to improve our product mix in order to increase profitability Work with regional sales groups to develop global key account plans for designated customers Work with regional sales and marketing action plans leveraging competitive intelligence. Target industry development: Manage strategic planning processes for target industries Identify, quantify and prioritize strategic industry segments, in collaboration with Coatings Marketing Team. Develop competitive landscape and map out next-best-alternative technology solutions Build value chain analysis, including key relational players and industry ecosystem Conduct primary market research through VOC collection at key customers and other influencers to refine the strategy Develop and execute business plans for target industries - working together with regional partners Develop business development plans to drive industry development strategy - working with regional BDM and regional marketing Lead cross-functional project teams to deliver new product development / commercial projects. Inorganic industry growth Develop and drive a plan, in collaboration with the Coatings group leadership team and Corporate Development, to scout for and develop inorganic growth opportunities (e.g. M&A, start-ups, buying / licensing technology, joint development, etc.) in the target industries. Industry-driven new product development (NPD) and commercialization: Evaluate industry-driven opportunities / threats Develop next generation product concepts that solve unmet needs of the marketplace Sponsor and drive NPD projects, working closely together with Technical Marketing, and the Technology functions, and where applicable regional stakeholders. Develop business cases, value proposition and pricing strategy Enlist charter customers for new products Manage innovation pipeline for target industries (portfolio) and take leadership to drive product development initiatives to commercialization. Work closely with the Technical function and Technical Marketing to review project progress, manage the overall progress / prioritization and drive the portfolio of projects to maximize commercial success. Plan, execute, and support commercial launches in coordination with the Technical Marketing function in collaboration with the Business Development and regional marketing and Sales Teams. Marketing Communications: Initiate and support development of marketing communications in coordination with Technical Marketing and Corporate Communications (product literature, advertising, trade shows, press releases, website content, feature articles, etc.) to help penetrate target markets and increase acquisition of new sales prospects Participate in and support organization of fairs, trade shows, seminars and other venues where Michelman is represented / showing presence in the target industries. This includes stand manning, presenting papers, be point of contact for press releases / expert articles, meeting customers & suppliers, etc. Product Management - drive through product management department: Establish and monitor pricing strategy and policy for the targeted industries, in coordination with the Regional Marketing / Product Management function. Demand-Side Marketing: Identify and engage key buying influencers in target markets Promote Michelman solutions, identify pull-through sales opportunities, and work with the business development team, the Coatings sales teams and marketing team to commercialize. Other: Perform related duties as assigned or as the situation dictates Reporting Line and Process The Industry Manager participates as a core team member of the Coatings Group s Marketing Team, reporting to the Group Marketing Manager. The Coatings Group s marketing team consists of peer Industry Managers, Technical Managers, and regional Business Development Managers and the Group Marketing Manager. The wider marketing team comprises regional Marketing Managers and the Corporate Marketing Communications Teams. Industry management process: The industry manager will represent his / her target industries in the marketing team, ensuring the right level of information is shared in this team for reporting purposes and to support decision making Both industry specific as well as cross-industry topics will be discussed in the group marketing team. Escalation of issues that have an impact outside of the target industries will be discussed and the course of action agreed upon in the group marketing team. Critical Competencies, Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Proven track record in the paints & coatings market Demonstrated history in growing a business At least 5 years of global business expertise Excellent interpersonal skills Strong decision-making abilities Strong business acumen, leadership skills Problem solving, organizational, and prioritization skills Proficient in standard business office software Ability to quickly learn and use specialized business software (Michelman business intelligence, sales and marketing software) Excellent presentation, written and oral communication skills in English, an additional language is considered an asset Education and Experience Masters Degree preferred 5 years in leadership Global Marketing position Strong market knowledge and industry contacts Technical chemistry and coating know-how is considered an asset Physical Demands and Work Environment Able to travel by car and plane to visit a diverse, global base of customers and Michelman sites Able to perform job duties at remote locations including industrial sites, chemical facilities, customer centers, and other locations.
