Job Responsibilities and Requirements: SUMMARY OF DUTIES: Performs repairs to bridges, buildings, and stations. Performs general construction labor functions. Responsible for the outside and inside carpentry and painting of structures, buildings, walls, docks, halls, stairs and temporary construction within areas as required by regulations, State or Federal laws and City regulations or as directed. Maintains proper care and use of materials, equipment and machines, skills and personal hand tools normally associated with crafts of ironworker and carpenter. Performs other mechanical duties as assigned including assistance to carpenters, masons and plumbers Works within the guidelines of the Environmental Management System by ensuring all activities are in compliance with all applicable environmental laws and regulations, all environmental policies and procedures and the integration of sound environmental principles and practices into all business operations. Works within the guidelines of the System Safety Program by being alert to physical hazards which affect operations, including the modification of recognition of or cessation of operations when conditions exist or could develop that would conflict with a safe operating environment for or others. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: Installs doors, partitions, cabinets, steps to wooden platforms, shelves, door locks, hand rails, pieces of equipment. Responsible for the repair of steps, shelves, walls, docks, halls, stairs and temporary construction. Paints offices, sand blasts (when required), pours concrete, repairs installations, fabric and gates. Operates standard hand and power tools. Reads blue prints, prepares tool kit, reviews task orders and safety notices relating to assignments. Performs all duties and tasks as assigned. PREFERRED EDUCATION: Some years of technical school. WORK EXPERIENCE: Climbs and performs duties on ladders, scaffolds, bucket trucks, scissors lifts at heights above 30 feet carrying 30 lbs. in wet conditions and constricted area. Works in narrow dark spaces in stairwells, construction areas, repair projects, platforms, loading docks, hallways, and storage areas. Slip, trip and fall hazards around ballast, uneven surfaces and loose material in day, night or portable lighting conditions. Works in shop areas, offices, at 25 to 50 foot levels and on high speed tracks lifting wood, metal or plastic containers, and tool bags of 35 - 50 lbs. May work as extra member of gang as required by work assignments. Must have good visual acuity, including ability to distinguish colors, depth perception and peripheral vision plus normal night vision. Must have acute hearing, with the ability to distinguish and separate sounds around heavy machinery, noisy equipment and tools, voices near and at a distance. Demonstrate agility and coordination while lifting, stooping, carrying heavy loads. COMMUNICATION AND INTERPERSONAL SKILLS: Must have excellent verbal and written communication skills.
